Development History of Fully Automatic Welding Robots in my country!

CHINA developed industrial robots starting in the 1970s. In the early days, it was a spontaneous research by universities and research institutes. By the mid-1980s, no industrial robots were available in the country. In foreign countries, industrial robots are already a very mature industrial product and have been widely used in the automotive industry. In view of the domestic and international situation at the time, the national "Seventh Five-Year Plan" included the development of industrial robots in the plan, and carried out research on industrial robots, especially taking application as an important part of the assessment, so that robot technology and users are closely combined, so that Chinese robots are aimed at the direction of practical application at the beginning.

At the same time, in 1986, the development of robots was included in the national "863" high-tech plan. On the fifth anniversary of the implementation of the national "863" plan, Comrade Deng Xiaoping put forward the goal of "developing high technology and realizing industrialization". Driven by the development of the domestic market and based on the technical reserves of robot technology research, the 863 subject expert group timely adjusted and extended the main direction, taking industrial robots and application engineering as one of the research and development focuses, and proposed the development policy of driving key technologies and basic research with applications, which was later included in the national "Eighth Five-Year Plan" and "Ninth Five-Year Plan". After more than ten years of continuous efforts, under the organization and support of the state, my country's research on fully automatic welding robots has made significant progress in basic technology, control technology, key components, etc., and has entered the stage of use, forming a series of spot welding and arc welding robot products that can achieve small-scale production.


Automobiles are the largest and earliest users of welding robots. As early as the late 1970s, the rectangular coordinate manipulator jointly developed by Shanghai Electric Welding Machine Factory and Shanghai Electric Tool Research Institute was successfully applied to the welding of Shanghai brand car chassis. "FAW" is the first enterprise in my country to introduce welding robots. Since 1984, it has successively introduced 3 spot welding robots from KUKA Company for the body welding of "Hongqi" cars and the welding of "Jiefang" car body covers at that time. In 1986, the welding robot was successfully applied to the welding of the front assembly, and in 1988, the robot body welding line was developed.


In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Volkswagen of Germany established joint ventures with Shanghai and FAW to produce cars. Although they were second-hand equipment from abroad, their welding automation and equipment level made us realize the huge gap with foreign countries.


Subsequently, FAW introduced welding robots in truck and light vehicle projects. It can be said that the introduction of technology and the introduction of production equipment and process equipment since the 1990s have raised my country's automobile manufacturing level from the original workshop-style production to large-scale production, and at the same time, foreign welding robots have entered China in large numbers.


Due to the rapid development of my country's infrastructure construction, the construction machinery industry has prospered, and the construction machinery industry has also become one of the industries that introduced fully automatic welding robots earlier.
